You don’t have to spend 12 hours in a starfield to see Chunks, the cube-shaped futuristic food item. There’s a Chunx apple on your first spaceship and a Chunx restaurant in the first town you visit. Everyone is eating chunks in the year 2330, and it inspired one chef to see if he could “chunk” his food.
Last week, Dennis Fischer posted a photo of his real-life Chunks breakfast on Reddit. A cube of eggs and a cube of Spam sit next to a puddle of beans. Fischer used a silicone ice cube mold to hold the egg and scooped out a cube from the rectangular shape of Spam. Starfield doesn’t have the equivalent of Chunks Spam, but egg pieces Looks very similar to Fischer’s version.
The Starfield subreddit blew up on the post and took it as an opportunity to discuss Bethesda’s latest food invention after Nuka-Cola. But many commentators wondered why Fischer didn’t split the beans. So, I asked him, and his answer was exactly what any restaurant owner would say.
“I saw a lot of people in the comments of the Reddit post saying that I should have used gelatin to cut the beans into pieces,” he said. “It would work, but I don’t really want to eat cold jelly beans. It’s important to me for these types of experiments that the food be something I want to eat so nothing goes to waste.”
Fisher owns a pizza place called The Pizza Cult in Glasgow, Scotland, where he regularly experiments with different ingredients to serve on weekends. Last weekend, he made a pizza with meaty chestnut mushrooms, ricotta cheese, Parma ham and a drizzle of pureed tomato sauce on top. He also serves mushroom and burrata pizza, which you can order along with his other creations at his stand at The Burras Market, located on the east end of town.
On his day off, Fischer had planned to spend it exploring planets in Starfield, but got hungry for breakfast after an hour of playing. It was the Spam sitting in his cupboard, with its distinctive rectangular shape, that inspired him to cut it into pieces. All it takes is a scrambled egg and some beans to make an English breakfast.
Now he is thinking what to break into pieces next. “Cheesecake would be fun,” he said. “Plus, I wanted to try that cubed layered potato thing that went viral a while back, so maybe that can join the party, too.”
Sadly, pizza doesn’t exist in Starfield’s (dystopian, you could argue) sci-fi universe. The folks at Chunk’s offer Chunk’s Pumpkin Pie and Chunk’s Wine, but not Chunk’s Pizza. Fisher hopes this is a flaw that Bethesda will fix with the DLC. I suggested he create his own Chunks Pizza to bring people together for the cause. And he agrees. “Sure. I might get a chance to play some when I’m at the unit next weekend.”
