The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization is set to have 21 million coins ever mined. Many BTC proponents believe that this anti-inflation feature should make the asset more scarce and valuable over time.
The total amount of Bitcoin produced to date is approximately 19.5 million, with more than 15% owned by ten individuals or organizations. In the following lines, we will take a closer look at the largest holders and find out their exact assets.
Satoshi Nakamoto is in first place
The mysterious developer who wrote the property’s original whitepaper in 2008 (amid the severe housing market crash that swept the world) is undoubtedly leading the pack, Owner 1.1 million BTC. Calculated at current rates, these reserves amount to approximately $29.5 billion.
Second place goes to digital asset manager Grayscale. The entity, which recently won a historic victory against the US SEC, holds 643,572 BTC (approximately $17.2 billion).
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange – Binance – is in third place with 498,147 BTC, while its rival Bitfinex holds 192,508 BTC. Interestingly, the fifth place belongs to the United States government. The ruling body has reserves of 175,000 BTC, seized from various criminal activities.
The American business intelligence company – co-founded by Bitcoin proponent Michael Saylor – is in sixth place with 152,800 BTC. Its latest purchase occurred sometime this summer when it acquired an additional 420 BTC.
Block One (140,000 BTC), OKEx (118,334 BTC), Robinhood (118,300 BTC), and the Winklevoss Twins (70,000 BTC) round out the top 10 list.
Potential missing participants
One entity that may rank among the above is the Bulgarian government. The ruling body seized more than 200,000 BTC from illegal miners in 2017. While some media outlets confirmed the seizure, former Chief Public Prosecutor Ivan Geshev denied such an operation.
In the following years, little was known about the mysterious BTC reserves owned by the government of the Eastern European country. One person who tried to raise the topic again is parliament member Ivaylo Marchev, who requested detailed information about the seizures and the exact whereabouts of the holdings. However, authorities did not cooperate, leaving the case unresolved.
In any case, Bulgaria could be placed in fourth place (right after Binance) should it have the leading digital currency worth more than $5.7 billion.
