Space10, the Copenhagen-based design office working exclusively with Ikea on innovative design concepts, has announced that it will close at the end of August 2023 after ten years of unprecedented collaboration.
‘Space10 was never meant to last and – after a decade of working with Ikea – we have achieved what we initially set out to accomplish,’ says Kave Pour, co-founder and head of the studio. ‘ ‘We feel extremely proud to have influenced one of the world’s largest design companies while making our ideas portable and shaping the conversation in everything from technology to design, architecture and food.’

From headquarters in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District, the Space10 team has spent the past decade building a portfolio of speculative projects and ideas that were open, democratic, purpose-driven, playful and community-oriented, with creativity to address urgent issues. and technology were combined. The studio’s projects have served as starting points for Ikea’s own work, and its projects were intended to create a culture of innovation within the Swedish furniture giant.

Space10: A decade of innovation
Yesterday’s Meatballs, 2015

One of the studio’s first projects was an alternative to meatballs to address unsustainable meat production. ‘Whether we like it or not, the world’s love affair with meat has become one of the biggest burdens on the planet,’ the team wrote in a text introducing Tomorrow’s Meatballs, which focuses on the types of food we should eat. After researching technological gastro-innovations, cultural rituals, and culinary inventions, the team designed a menu that included The Wonderful Waste Ball, The Nutty Ball, and The Crispy Bug Ball, which use food waste, nuts and legumes, and protein-rich insects. was created using . – Ingredients that may be considered optional today but will likely become a normal part of our cuisine in the near future.
The Growroom: food-producing architecture, 2016

The Growroom combines sustainable food production, urban greening and on-demand manufacturing. Presented as a solo project at the Chart Art Fair in 2016, it soon evolved into an open-source shareable design that reached users globally. Developed with architects Signe Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Hassum, this structure is envisioned as a way of creating urban, shared spaces, from offices to homes that grow food.
The growroom can be built with just two rubber hammers, 16 sheets of plywood, and a local makerspace or workshop to help with CNC milling. Made of wood, it is designed for simple, effortless assembly. ‘By avoiding the pollution of global shipping, we intentionally made the design open source, so anyone can download and build their own growroom, wherever they live,’ says the team. ‘A month after its release, the downloads crossed the 30,000 mark and the numbers kept rising.’
IKEA Place, 2017

How can a furniture company stay relevant in an increasingly digital and virtual future? Ikea Place attempted to answer this question through an app that would bring furniture to its location via the user’s phone’s camera. A text introducing the project states, ‘Placing furniture in augmented reality was an obvious use case, yet the potential significance for Ikea was enormous.’ ‘Not everyone lives near an Ikea store, and around 40 per cent experience an ‘imagination gap’ – a lack of confidence in taking risks with regard to change in their homes. With augmented reality, Ikea could suddenly meet people right where they were. So that’s where we started – at home and through phone cameras people will use to enhance it.’
Space on Wheels, 2018

Space on Wheels explores a driverless future by looking at the potential of self-driving vehicles. The Space10 team say, ‘As self-driving cars hit our roads, it’s important to explore how they can enable a better everyday life in addition to getting us from A to B.’ The project included a study on the history of self-driving cars, their opportunities and challenges, and a collaboration with F°am Studio to visualize seven new ideas for autonomous vehicles for the future. These include flexible workspaces (a movable shared space that is effectively an office on wheels); Coffee on the Go (a boutique rolling roastery); health care (drug dispensary); The Farm (a mobile farmers market); Play (a pod for augmented reality experiences); Hotel (a sleep station) and of course a shop.
Future Food Today Cookbook, 2019

Created in collaboration with the design agency Barkas, food of the future today Food, technology and science are cooked up in a blend developed over months of research in the lab’s test kitchen. This book delves into the sustainable kitchen of the future, highlighting how what we consume today will have an impact on the foreseeable future. The book reflects Space10’s aim to make positive assumptions about the future of food, giving people the tools to try the cuisine for themselves.
With over 20 unique recipes that ‘challenged the category of cookbooks visually and conceptually’, it included everything from sustainable junk food like ‘dogless hotdogs and algae chips’, to experimental foods like ‘The Bug Burger’, to feeding a party Includes food for , zero-waste snacks and many other dishes that ‘we might one day eat regularly’. The cuisine reflects seasonal changes and moods, and includes inspirations from many cultures.
Open Fabrication, 2019

The Open Fabrication Project answers the question: ‘How can we apply algorithms to create unique furniture from mass-produced components?’ Space10 collaborated with design studio Ransmere Inc. to transform paper waste into affordable customized furniture, using open-source design principles. ‘For open fabrication, we have created a series of prototypes and a conceptual platform for customizing the furniture from a small but versatile module selection,’ he says.
An algorithm can calculate hundreds of furniture designs, starting with eight different modules, creating a range that includes shelving systems, tables, bed frames, seating areas and more. ‘The modules were made from 100 per cent recycled paper waste, which, if realized as a concept, would actively address a significant waste challenge. Add aluminum hardware and the result is affordable and customizable furniture that’s also reusable.’
B Home, 2020

A click-and-build project designed in collaboration with Tanita Klein and with a digital platform created by Bakken & Beck, Bee Home is a kit with simple instructions for building and installing an insect sanctuary. ‘Bees alone are absolutely essential to life on this planet as we know it,’ says Space10. ‘For millions of years, these tiny creatures have played a leading role in the pollination of flowering plant species. Yet human influences such as global urbanization, regular use of pesticides and monoculture farming threaten their place in this world.’
Model City, 2021

ideal city is a book published with Gestalten that explores how to create better everyday life in our cities. A compilation of best practice from around the world – 53 cities from 30 countries – this book showcases urban projects that are attempting to make a difference, moving slowly but steadily towards the impossible goal of ‘utopia’. Projects inside range from public toilets to new parks, urban farms, food provision, prisons and large-scale city district regeneration. Divided into five focal areas – The Resourceful City, The Accessible City, The Shared City, The Safe City and The Desirable City – the book features projects and proposals from selected architects such as Selgascano, Naruse Inokuma Architects, Gustafson Porter + Bowman and Urban . Think tank with many thinkers and theorists.
Future One, 2022

This report explores the potential of technology to support sustainable forestry. ‘According to the United Nations, the world has lost 420 million hectares of forest area in the three decades between 1990 and 2020. Work needs to begin immediately to halt deforestation and reforest the planet,’ writes Space10 in the introduction to the project. The project develops from four areas of focus, including abatement of deforestation, reforestation, traceability and indigenous lands, combined with research into applied technologies. ‘We need to listen to and learn from the ways Indigenous people interact with forests to understand where, how and what role digital technologies should play in local contexts. and provide space for active and ongoing community engagement around the design, implementation and utility of technologies,’ he says.
Sofa in an Envelope, 2023

‘Couch in an Envelope’ aims to re-imagine the sofa as a flat-pack, modular and lightweight furniture piece. Designed in collaboration with Swiss studio Painter & Tourrone (founded by Alexis Tourrone and Stefano Panterotto) and incorporating AI in the process, the tiny sofa’s concept followed the concerns of modern living, from space-saving to roundness.
The starting point of the design is the sofa frame: lightweight (only 10 kg), modular and designed for easy assembling and disassembling, it is made of 100 percent recyclable materials. The couch comes flat-packed, packaging allowing one person to carry it by the handle but also allowing for wider distribution in a seamless, cost-efficient and more sustainable way. Materials include an aluminum frame, cellulose-based fabrics and threads, and mycelium foam.
Additionally, the sofa’s design takes modern living into account: its modular creations can be adjusted to suit a person’s needs around the house, and can be transformed from a place of rest to a more social space during the day.
