It’s no secret that ChatGPT can help you with everyday tasks at work and in your personal life. However, it can be difficult to input the correct sign to get your desired answer. This little “tone modifier” trick can make a huge difference.
If you’ve ever heard the words “watch your tone” from a parent, you know that how you say something makes a big difference in how your words are conveyed.

This concept may be the reason why when ChatGPT composes an email, essay, presentation, or any written text, it may not sound the way you want it to. To fix that problem, just tell ChatGPT what tone you want to use.
For example, when I ask ChatGPT to write an email to my boss stating that I will be out for the rest of the day due to stomach pains, it generates a very rude, professional-sounding email. Which is quite unnatural and looks AI- generated.

He does this because when he sees the word “boss” in the prompt, he assumes the tone he should adopt is a super professional, serious tone. However, some employees have a more informal texting relationship with their bosses because of how closely and frequently they collaborate.

To remedy this problem, add some tone modifiers. Social Media Today has put together a thorough chart showcasing tone modifier combinations that can help generate the right output, such as “causal and conversational” or “humorous and informal.”
For this email use case, I’ll use the tone combo of “Casual and Conversational” because I want the tone to be more casual to reflect the mode in which we typically communicate. All I did was add the tone modifier to the prompt. And I got a totally different result.

The results of the changes resembled an email or Slack message that I would actually send to my manager. The opening email will require a complete, time-consuming rewrite, while this one just needs a few quick revisions to get ready.
Tone modifiers can be taken advantage of to customize the output for any type of text prompt, and go beyond the chart linked above.

For example, you can ask ChatGPT to output content in a way that a five-year-old child can understand. While that description isn’t specifically a tone, it will simplify the response to better align with your needs if your needs involve explaining something to a child.
You can also use the Custom Instructions feature on ChatGPT to input the tone to be used by the chatbot.
To do so, all you have to do is ask “What would ChatGPT like to know about you in order to provide better responses?” I’ll add the tone modifier. and “How would you like to provide feedback to ChatGPT?” Fields under Custom Instructions.

The biggest advantage of using this feature instead of just changing your prompt is that it will apply these instructions to all your outputs until you remove the tone from the build.
If you want to produce a range of output text that should all sound the same, custom directives can save you a lot of time.
