Elon Musk has thoughts about working from home. Many, many thoughts.
The CEOs of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter shared all of that in an interview with CNBC, leaving no doubt where their stance on working from home is.
“I’m a big believer that people are more productive when they’re in person,” Musk said before bringing up Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France. “The whole notion of working from home is like a fake Marie Antoinette quote,” Let them eat cake. Car, work in the factory (…) The people who come fix your house, they can’t work from home, but you can? Does it sound morally right? It’s messed up,” Musk said.

“People should get off their righteous moral high horse with the nonsense of working from home,” he concluded.
Musk continued to compare the very different businesses and situations during the short conversation, saying that “the laptop class is living in la-la land.”

“It’s not just a matter of productivity, I think it’s morally wrong.”
While he said he does not expect all of his employees to have the same work hours, Musk casually mentioned that he works “seven days a week” and claimed only “two or three days off” a year. “There are days. Which he does not engage in some “meaningful work”.

Musk has pushed back against the work-from-home mandate that was instituted by many companies during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. In June 2022, he said “remote working is no longer acceptable,” and began requiring Tesla employees to spend a minimum of 40 hours per week in the office. They did the same thing (opens in a new tab) at Twitter after they acquired the company in October 2022.
