- Arlington PD confirmed that the image and accompanying reports were fake.
- But when the news was shared by a reputed Twitter account on Monday morning, the market took a brief dip.
An AI-generated image of an alleged explosion near the Pentagon in Washington, DC that is going viral on social media is apparently fake.
But that didn’t stop it from being spread across social media by dozens of accounts — and the stock market briefly plummeted as the fake news spread.
Early Monday, a photo showing a large cloud of smoke near a building began circulating on Twitter, along with claims that an explosion had occurred near the Pentagon.
But that report was bogus, Arlington PD said.
“There is no explosion or incident occurring on or near the Pentagon Reservation, and there is no immediate threat or danger to the public,” Arlington PD tweeted on Monday,
While it has not been confirmed that the image was created using AI tools, the image bears some characteristics of AI-generated images. In the falsified image, the pillars of the alleged building are of different sizes and the fence appears to merge with the pavement at some places.
The photo was spread by dozens of accounts, including RTA Russian state-media Twitter account with more than 3 million followers, but the post has since been removed. Other accounts appear to be related to conspiracy theories or the war in Ukraine.
there was information about the alleged explosion Shared by Twitter account @DeItaone at 10:06am local time, By 10:10 the market had fallen 0.26% but quickly bounced back.
DeItaone later posted that the news of the explosion was false.
