A man was shot and killed in downtown Kansas City on Friday night, according to police.
Officers were dispatched to 10th and Locust Streets around 9:15 p.m. and found a gunshot victim in the parking lot of the Express Stop gas station, said Sgt. Jake Bechina, spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.
He was unresponsive when officers arrived, Bechina said. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings from the investigation pointed to a “conversation” in the parking lot of the business between the “victim and one or more suspects,” Bechina said.

Witnesses gave police information that led them to a person of interest, who was taken into custody a few blocks away near 10th and Grand Boulevard. Bechina said detectives were still working Friday night to determine the man’s level of involvement.
Friday night’s murder is Kansas City’s 94th murder of 2023, according to data kept by The Star. Last year, the city saw its second deadliest year with 172 murders.
On the rising number of murders in Kansas City this year, Bechina highlighted the need for peaceful methods to resolve conflicts. A large portion of the city’s violence stems from some sort of argument, he said.
Bechina said, “If more people settled disputes with words and discussion and did not pick up guns, there would be far fewer murders in Kansas City.” “I can say that for sure.”
