Two bears attacked a Krispy Kreme donut van that was stopped outside a convenience store at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage while on a delivery route.
Shelley Dino, store manager at Joint Base Elmendorf, said drivers usually leave their doors open when stopping at a store, but this time a nearby sow and her calf were forced inside, where they remained for perhaps 20 minutes. . -Richardson JMM Express. Dino said the bears ate donut holes and other pastries while ignoring the banging on the side of the van that was intended to scare them away.
“I was banging the van and they weren’t budging. I could hear them breaking packages and everything,” she said. “I was like, ‘They don’t even care.’”
When the bears could not be woken up, base security was called and sirens were sounded to scare away the bears, he said.
The bears eventually came out and hung out in front of the convenience store and gas station for a while before heading into the woods.
It’s not unusual to see a bear in or around a store, but this has never happened before, Dino said, adding that delivery drivers now lock their doors when they stop at the store.
“When we come in, when we go out we are cautious. When we take out the garbage, we take it out in pairs, especially if it is dark,” she said.
Capt. Lexi Smith, a base spokeswoman, said base officials “have been aware of this and other wildlife situations for the past several months.”
“We urge the public to exercise caution to ensure you are protecting our wildlife and yourself. Wildlife may be our neighbors, but they should not be attracted to our human food sources,” he said by email.
