New data released by the U.S. Census shows that the median household income exceeds $100,000 in eight New Jersey counties.
Hunterdon County has the highest median income for all household types in the state at $142,518, according to 2022 American Community Survey data released Thursday. Neighboring Somerset County is in second place. (See below to see how your county compares.)
Census data shows the median household income nationwide in 2022 was $74,755.
The median household income in New Jersey was $96,346 – the highest statewide in the nation and $21,000 higher than the national average.
Only one New Jersey county had a household income below the national average. According to the census, households in Cumberland County take home an average of $60,755.
The Census defines a household as any group of people who share the same residence, and can include married couples, multi-generational families, or groups of roommates.
Some types of families earn more than others.
Married couples earn the most compared to all household types in each county. Married couples in Somerset County have the highest income in the state, at more than $180,000.
Nonfamily households, which may include groups of roommates or unmarried couples, earn the least of any type of household. The median income for non-family households in Cumberland County is the lowest of any type of household in the state, at $32,528.
